Professor Ping Wang is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science at the University of York and a York University Second Research Chair. Prior to this, she worked at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore from 2008 to 2018. Her main research interests are wireless communication networks, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things, with a recent focus on integrating artificial intelligence (AI) technologies into communication networks. She has published over 250 papers and conference articles, and her academic work has been widely disseminated in top IEEE journals and conferences. She received Best Paper Awards from the IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (WCNC) in 2020 and 2012, the IEEE Communications Society Green Communications and Computing Technical Committee in 2018, and the IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC) in 2007. She is an IEEE Fellow and a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society. In July 2024, Professor Wang visited the School of Electronic Information and Communications at Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, Hubei Province, and held academic exchanges with the lab’s faculty, students, and interested attendees in Room D304. In this talk, Professor Wang presented on the topic ‘Towards Fast-Convergent Federated Learning.’ Through the talk, Professor Wang shared three federated learning techniques—federated learning for non-IID data (adaptive weighting), federated learning for model heterogeneity, and over-the-air federated learning—and their applications in communications, as well as her team’s research work. After the talk, through multiple rounds of questions and discussions, the lab’s faculty and students gained a deeper understanding of the application of federated learning-based algorithms in communications, and the lab and Professor Wang looked ahead and planned future collaboration on federated learning applications in communications.
